Dietitians awarded PhDs UCD 020616 HR CC

Four INDI Dietitians receive their PhDs at UCD on June 2nd.

All are active INDI members. They are Dr Cathy Breen, Dr Mary Horan, Dr Conor Kerley and Dr Aoibheann McMorrow.  They are photographed above with Dr Clare Corish (left). UCD and Prof. Helen Roche (right), UCD.
  • Cathy's PhD research explored the role of carbohydrate in the clinical management of Type 2 diabetes among usual care patients in Ireland.
  •  Mary’s PhD explored the associations between maternal diet and lifestyle during pregnancy and offspring adiposity up to two years of age as well as looking at the effect of a low glycaemic index diet during pregnancy on maternal BMI up to two years postpartum.
  •  Conor’s PhD research incorporated two main themes – vitamin D and dietary nitrate – in multiple clinical conditions (asthma, COPD, obstructive sleep apnoea, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, cystic fibrosis) and was conducted with both adults and children.
  •  Aoibheann's PhD work investigated the effects of anti-inflammatory nutrients on future risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in overweight and obese adolescents. During her PhD, Aoibheann was also awarded a Marie-Curie scholarship to examine interactions between nutrition and epigenetics at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Aoibheann completed her PhD under the supervision of Professor Helen Roche, also an INDI member.
Congratulations to the four new doctors, to their supervisors, their families and friends. The future for Irish dietetics and INDI is excellent with these four inspiring role models.....and even the weather was perfect!
