Sterols and stanols - get to the heart of the matter with a healthy cholesterol level

333 heart health lgAlthough the incidence has declined in recent years, CVD is the most common cause of death in Ireland accounting for ~36% of all deaths (IHF, 2007).  Coronary heart disease (CHD) itself accounts for nearly one quarter of all deaths annually. The major risk factors include blood lipid abnormalities (to include high cholesterol), raised blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity and obesity. As a result cholesterol has developed a bad reputation due to association with heart disease. However, it is important to emphasize that not all cholesterol is ‘bad’; in fact cholesterol in essential for life.
