The Plant-based Diets and Food Sustainability interest group of the INDI have produced 8 fantastic new fact sheets dealing with many aspects of plant-based diets.  A plant-based diet consists predominantly of plant foods - wholegrains, tubers, legumes, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, with few or no animal products. A well planned, plant-based diet can provide all the nutrients for good health and can be nutritionally adequate for all stages of life. However, as with any diet where there is elimination of certain foods, there are some nutrients that you must pay particular attention to, to make sure you are getting enough.Plant- based diets take many forms, varying in which foods they include and exclude. The most popular types include:Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat dairy foods and eggs but not meat, poultry or seafood.Ovo-vegetarians include eggs but avoid all other animal foods.Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy foods but avoid all other animal foods.Pescatarians eat fish and/or shellfish, they may eat eggs and/or dairy.Vegans don’t eat any animal products including honey, dairy and eggs.Flexitarian diets consist predominantly of plant foods but also includes meat and other animal products.Whether you are following a vegetarian or vegan diet or simply choose to eat meat free meals more often, these fact sheets aim to help you learn ways to meet your nutritional needs and explore different ways to add plant foods into your diet. This information is not meant to replace advice from your medical doctor or individual counselling with a registered dietitian. It is intended for educational and informational purposes only. The new fact sheets are available to view and download here:
