Malnutrition Awareness Week will take place from 10–14 November 2025. This important Europe-wide initiative is an opportunity to raise awareness of malnutrition in Ireland - a serious but often under-recognised issue affecting over 222,000 people with Ireland with an annual cost to the health service of €2.8 billion (Irish Society for Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism, 2024).
Anyone can develop malnutrition but in Ireland it usually occurs in people who are unwell. You may be more at risk if you are:
- 65 years or older
- Living with a long-term health condition (for example, lung disease)
- Living with cancer
- Experiencing difficulties swallowing
- Living alone
Malnutrition is preventable and treatable, yet it continues to impact clinical outcomes, increases length of stay, recovery times, and reduces quality of life.
